So the CD is 25 years old today! Does anyone care? I'm quite interested in anyone's opinions on future formats, so much so, that for a time I was going to do my final year dissertation on the subject.
Will we still be buying albums on CD in 10 years time? ...Will we be buying albums at all anymore is another question really... will the trend continue towards single songs? (Ash anybody?)
How long before downloads (legal ones) overtake the physical product? And what about downloads themselves, what format will they be in; MP3, AAC, WMA?! DRM or no DRM?
Or will music as a product simply cease to exist, becoming free, with the 'record' companies business models changing completely to get a share in artists tour/merchandise revenue instead... and then all music will enter the public domain for free, which is then wirelessly streamed by two teeny-tiny Apple iFlies that take up a geosynchronous orbit around each of our ears?
Opinions welcome.
